The collection contains papers of Leroy Wesley Cox, a Charlottesville, Va., carriage and wagon manufacturer and Republican Party worker including an account book from his carriage business, 1884; voter registration lists; papers re party meetings; lists of black voters and black members of the McKinley and Hobart Club on the stationary of Thomas L. Rosser, 1896. The papers also contain an account book, 1912-1915, of the Star Theater, Charlottesville; a record of A.D. Cox's estate, 1913-1914; Bible records for the Humber, Cox, and Lacy families; a poem, 1885, "The late fire in Charlottesville, Va., by James Avis Bartley; printed reports and minutes of the WCTU and a Cox family photograph. Also included in the collection are political broadsides and newsclippings; precinct poll books, 1915; records of ward membership, 1896; a general record book of the Republican Party, 1894; and correspondence of Cox as secretary and chairman of the Charlottesville Republican Party, 1894.

Temperance organization founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1874. Campaigning against the use of alcohol and in favor of labor laws and prison reform, the W.C.T.U. became one of the largest and most influential women's organizations of the 19th century.
